Sibling Interest to the Depths of the Sea

The nice thing about the generally small number of main venues at the Fringe is that I knew exactly where to go to take Jamie to our next show together: Science Adventures: Deep Sea! This show was an obvious one to take Jamie to, for the following reason: he’s the opposite of me.

I suppose you, the reader, might need a bit more context than that. Generally out of the two of us, I am the more artistic sibling, while Jamie is the scientific and mathematical sibling. Our opposing interests became combined in the Fringe show of the day, which just so happened to be in the same venue as Burning Down the Horse had been.

We were surrounded by other families in the small room that hosted Science Adventures. Even though I annoyed him greatly about the idea of sitting closer to the front of the stage, Jamie decided that the best seats in the house were in the back and off to the side. I couldn’t argue with that, though, because the seats in the back had cushions.

The show was cute and well written, including many different facts about the sea. The main “plot” of the show included going down to the depths of the ocean in a submarine, explaining the many different levels of the ocean in a kid-friendly and easy-to-digest way. There was a spectacular use of puppetry and storytelling, and the two actors – yep, only two! – were great at including the audience in the shenanigans. I even learned something about the ocean zones; the final zone of the ocean is named the Hadal Zone, named after the Greek god of the Underworld, Hades. If that isn’t an absolutely terrifying fact, I have no idea what is!

After the show, we walked back to our hotel once again in the rain. Pokémon Go was once again our companion, despite the chill and the raindrops that blurred our screens. We were chilled when we got back to our room, yet more than happy with the amount of digital creatures we collected.

A short day, for sure, yet still fulfilling. I spent time with my goblin little brother, learned a new thing about the terrifying ocean, and got to walk in the rain (something a Californian girl doesn’t do that often). The many facets of Edinburgh continue to show itself as we make our way through its streets.

  1. I need to catch up, but I had a free moment from chaos and you know I can’t resist the ocean! Glad the depths brought you guys together! The rain is for sure blessing you guys after the ocean.

  2. Jamie and Science Adventures is no surprise. Nice of you to consider taking your golin little bro to a Science activity. It always surprises me when we are not exactly like our sibs. My sister and I were polar opposites ~ she was the brainy math type and I was the artsy-fartsy one (her description of me, not mine!)

As I said in an earlier post, I’m not sure why your Feral Cows entries get to me so late. I try to check on new entries regularly but somehow I miss them. G-r-r-r! Anyway, it’s been so much fun following your adventures with words and photos. Keep it up!!

By now, your dad is with you guys in Greece. I’ll bet you all were beyond excited to see him. I don’t think you have been away from each other for this long before. I know Grandpa and Uncle Tom are enjoying critter-sitting. I think Uncle Tom has already played golf. Don’t know if they’ve been swimming yet or not.

I’m sure you all will have a wonderful time together in Greece. It sounds spectacular! Hugs and love for now . . .

  3. Grandma beat me to this issues response, but here I am! . I think it is really great that you are so willing to take your “Goblin” little brother to so many events. You are a special “Big” sister! FYI: uncle Tom has not played golf yet. The temp has hit the mid 90’s and Tom is waiting for the temp to drop to a more comfortable range. The dogs continue to mug us constantly. We can hardly fight them off. I now am anxiously waiting to hear about your adventures in France and surrounding environs. Keep on truckin!!!

  4. Oops! My bad . . . I could have sworn Grandpa said Uncle Tom had played golf. Maybe Grandpa said Uncle Tom was thinking about playing golf. I blame everything on me being hard-of-hearing. Great excuse, right?

    Hugs again . . .
